Johanna Hamilton recently surprised herself by placing third in the annual motorcoach driver competition hosted by the Midwest Bus and Motorcoach Association (MBMCA) on July 23 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Hamilton, who has been driving motorcoaches for Compass Coach in Cedar Springs, Michigan, for the past 18 months, was participating in her first-ever competition.
“I’m so shocked by myself,” she said. “This is my first competition ever.”
One of the most challenging aspects of the competition for Hamilton was navigating the Serpentine, a zigzag course designed to test drivers’ precision and control.
“I think if I could have started straight on, lined up, I probably could have done it,” she noted. “But since we started offset, I think that’s where I screwed that one up.”
Despite the difficulty, Hamilton performed well in other sections of the competition.
“I nailed the alley dock itself, but I let just the slightest bit of pressure, air pressure, out at the end, and I backed in there without having to pull forward,” she explained.
Hamilton’s third-place finish has given her newfound confidence in her abilities, and she looks forward to future challenges on the road.
Bus & Motorcoach News recently caught up with Hamilton to discuss her passion for driving, career highlights, and the experiences that have shaped her journey.
What’s the biggest tip you’ve received as a driver, and the story behind it?
Once, I was mailed a check for $500 from a group. They were having a big day out, and a few of the younger ones overindulged. Instead of ending the trip early, I helped out with babysitting and cleanup so the rest could enjoy their day. They really appreciated that extra effort.
Have you had any bizarre groups on your bus?
Honestly, I can’t think of anything that I’d call bizarre. Every group is different, but nothing too out of the ordinary.
Do you have a go-to phrase while driving?
I do, though it’s a little unprofessional — I tend to say, “Well, sh–” a lot. It’s so common that one group even made me a T-shirt with that phrase by the end of the day!
What led you to become a motorcoach driver?
I was a caregiver for years, but that work burned me out. On a whim, I applied for a school bus job. I liked driving but found working for a school district too political, so I quit. Then I saw an ad for a driver position with Compass Coach and applied. I’ve been with them for a year and a half and absolutely love it.
What were your previous careers?
I spent many years as a caregiver before moving into professional driving.
How many states or miles have you driven a bus?
I’ve driven through five or six states, but I’m not sure about the total miles.
Do you have a favorite or least favorite destination?
I really dislike driving in Chicago. It’s not the driving itself but the way people drive there. It can be a real challenge.
What’s your favorite feature of the bus you drive?
I love the giant front window. The view is just incredible.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
Placing third in this year’s MBMCA competition is definitely up there.
What advice would you give to a new driver?
Trust your gut. Always.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
The highlight of my career is definitely placing third in this year’s MBMCA competition. It’s an unexpected accomplishment for me.
