FREMONT, Calif. — The Pacific Bus Museum will celebrate its 37th year with its annual summer open house Aug. 16, featuring vintage buses, a barbecue, memorabilia vendors and the unveiling of a previously undisclosed historic coach.
The free event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum’s headquarters in Fremont, will also mark the final public appearance of a 1931 Greyhound coach that has been on loan to the museum since last year’s open house.
The surprise addition to the museum’s collection is not another Greyhound bus, officials said, reflecting the organization’s efforts to broaden its collection and preserve a wider range of bus history.
“I love how we continue to evolve. We are always looking to update our fleet to tell new bus history stories. We have expanded our research archive and continue to see new faces show up to our twice-monthly visitor days,” said Tom Baker, the museum’s director-at-large.
Founded in 1989 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1991, the Pacific Bus Museum preserves and operates historic buses while educating the public about the industry’s history through restorations, exhibits and community events. Past events have included bus fan gatherings, history events, birthday parties, and car shows.
The museum also has expanded its audience online, with its Facebook following growing from about 4,500 to more than 11,000 over the past year. Officials said they hope the increased visibility will bring more younger visitors to this year’s event.
In addition to the museum’s operational fleet, several visiting buses from private owners and other collections will be on display. Owners wishing to exhibit their buses are encouraged to arrive beginning at 9 a.m.
The open house also will feature a flea market offering bus memorabilia and transportation-related merchandise, a barbecue lunch and raffles. Lunch will be available for a suggested donation of $17 for adults and $10 for children ages 10 and younger.
All proceeds will support the Pacific Bus Museum’s preservation and educational programs. The museum is located at 37974 Shinn St. in Fremont, and admission is free.
