From the driver’s seat: Meet Bill Mong

Veteran driver Bill Mong has been with Compass Coach in Cedar Springs, Michigan, for a decade, the last two years in the maintenance department. But this multi-talented transportation always steps up to drive when he’s needed.

Recently, he achieved a significant milestone by placing second in his second roadeo — an annual motorcoach driver competition hosted by the Midwest Bus and Motorcoach Association (MBMCA).

This year’s competition took place on July 23 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Last year, Bill also made it to the podium, securing third place at the conference in Branson, Missouri.

“I’m moving up,” Bill shared with a smile.

Bus & Motorcoach News caught up with Mong to discuss his passion for driving, his career highlights, and the experiences that have shaped his journey.

What’s the biggest tip you’ve received, and what’s the story behind it?

I once received a $2,100 tip. It was during a seniors’ trip on the East Coast train tour in New Hampshire. I got tips from both the bus company and the passengers. I really connected with the group — I laughed, joked, and ate with them. I was like a part of the family.

What’s the strangest or most bizarre group you’ve driven?

Honestly, I’ve never had a strange or bizarre group. They’ve all been pretty standard.

What’s your go-to phrase?

I’m always saying, “It’s all in the Bill Skills,” whether in the shop or on the road. My co-workers just smile and go, “Sure, Bill, sure!”

How did you become a driver?

I started driving right after high school. My first job was driving a semi, and I’ve been behind the wheel ever since. It’s been 50 years now, and I’ve been with Compass Coach for the last four.

What are your previous careers?

I’ve worked as a mechanic, driver, and supervisor for The Rapid, the transit operation in Grand Rapids.

How many miles or states have you driven a bus?

I’ve driven through about 22 states, though the total mileage is anyone’s guess!

What’s your favorite and least favorite destination?

New York City is my favorite—there’s nothing like the challenge of driving there.

What’s your favorite bus feature?

The AC, for sure.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received?

Someone once told me, “You’re a great driver,” and that really stuck with me.

What’s your funniest travel story?

One time, I was following the boss, and he took a wrong turn. We both had a good laugh about it later.

What’s your best piece of advice for a newbie?

Take it slow, and be patient with yourself. There’s a learning curve, but you’ll get there.

What’s your career highlight?

Competing in these rodeos has definitely been a highlight for me.
