From the driver’s seat: Meet Anthony Bowman

Anthony Bowman has been driving commercial vehicles since he turned 21 in 2006, with jobs that have ranged from ice road deliveries to wrecker operations for big vehicles like motorcoaches.

He won first place in the Midwest Bus and Motorcoach Association’s annual driving competition on July 23 during its conference held in Grand Rapids. Next, he’ll compete in the UMA International Drivers Competition in Oklahoma City, part of the UMA Motorcoach EXPO scheduled for February 20-23.

Bus & Motorcoach News caught up with Bowman to discuss his love for motorcoach driving, career highlights, and what keeps him passionate about the industry.

What’s the biggest tip you’ve received, and what’s the story behind it?

The biggest tip I ever got was $500. The client was really impressed with my driving skills and how I conducted myself. It was a three-day trip to Chicago, and I guess my professionalism paid off!

How did you become a driver?

I transitioned from the wrecker industry, where I was a heavy-wrecker operator for 14 ½ years. Moving to motorcoach driving was definitely a change of pace – much more laid back and safer. I really enjoy the interaction with passengers; it’s refreshing to meet new people every day and hear their stories.

How many states have you driven a bus in?

At least 10 states so far.

What’s your favorite or least favorite destination, and why?

I don’t really have a least favorite—I love a good challenge. The big cities are where I thrive. My favorite destination so far is Washington, D.C. There’s so much to learn there, and once you know the secrets to parking, like getting tips from the local police, it’s a great place to navigate.

What’s your favorite feature on the bus?

Definitely the air ride seat. It’s your best friend on long drives.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received?

Most people compliment my smooth driving. I’ve had passengers tell me they’ve never been able to sleep on a bus until they rode with me. They feel comfortable and safe enough to relax, and that’s the best feedback I could ask for.

What’s your funniest travel story?

One of the funniest moments was my first time driving through Chicago’s Lower Wacker. I was pretty nervous because it was a new experience for me, and I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be down there. Everyone on the bus was encouraging me, laughing, and making jokes, which helped me push through it. It was a mix of nerves and humor that I’ll never forget.

What’s your best piece of advice for a newbie?

Approach the job with a mindset of fun. It’s a relaxing job if you let it be, so enjoy what you do, and the rest will follow.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

I’ve had the chance to see new places and experience new things, especially since I started driving buses. I’ve been to a lot of places I’d never visited before, like Washington, D.C. There’s something special about seeing these iconic cities for the first time through the eyes of a motorcoach driver.

Why did you decide to get into motorcoach driving?

As a wrecker operator, motorcoach driving wasn’t something I ever thought of, but I wanted a change of pace. I have this mindset that if I haven’t done something, I want to learn how to do it. It’s safer, and I love the interaction with people. Plus, being able to take people to destinations they’ve never been to before is really rewarding. My favorite trips are the ones with students with disabilities. It’s great to be part of something new and special for them.
