ALEXANDRIA, VA — The motorcoach industry’s best professional drivers will have a national stage in January as registration opens for the 2027 UMA International Driver Competition, held Jan. 18-19 during the 2027 UMA Motorcoach EXPO in San Antonio.
A signature feature of UMA Motorcoach EXPO, the annual competition celebrates the skill, judgment and professionalism required of commercial motorcoach drivers. Competitors will be tested through a written examination and a demanding hands-on skills course designed to highlight safe, precise vehicle operation.
“This is a highly competitive event because some of the best drivers in North America come to compete,” said UMA’s Ken Presley. “At the same time, everyone has a lot of fun, and the experience often builds lasting relationships.”
The competition begins with the written exam on the afternoon of Jan. 18 (2:00 PM – 3:30 PM CT) and continues with the skills course on the morning of Jan. 19. Drivers should plan to arrive no later than midday Jan. 18 and depart Jan. 20.
Following registration, drivers will receive qualification forms to complete and return, including the documentation required for competition eligibility.
Top finishers will earn both recognition and cash awards. The Grand Champion will receive a trophy and $3,000, while the First Runner-up will receive $2,000 and the Second Runner-up will receive $1,000. All participating drivers will qualify for an “Excellence in Driving” certificate and will be recognized during the UMA Awards Gala dinner that evening.
Qualified competitors also receive a complimentary two-night hotel stay and full UMA Motorcoach EXPO registration, making the event an accessible opportunity for operators to showcase outstanding drivers. “For the most part, the only expense is getting the driver to the competition,” Presley said.
