7 honored at GNEMA Motorcoach Professional Awards

Seven standout motorcoach employees were recognized for their dedication and contributions at the Greater Northeast Motorcoach Association’s (GNEMA) 2024 Motorcoach Professional Awards. 

The awards were presented during GNEMA’s annual meeting on Sept. 18 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The winners were nominated by their companies for their commitment to safety, service, and excellence. Each received a plaque, a cash prize, and an overnight stay sponsored by Resorts Casino Hotel and Caesars Entertainment.

These employees were recognized at the GNEMA 2024 Motorcoach Professional Awards.

This year’s honorees come from a variety of backgrounds within the motorcoach industry, but all share a passion for their work and a dedication to their companies and passengers.

Dattco winner

Lifelong passion for the industry

Dennis Lyons, Vice President at DATTCO, was recognized for his decades of commitment and leadership within the motorcoach industry. Nominated by Pam Martinez, Lyons began his career as a driver and worked his way through various roles to his current position.

He is the go-to person for any technical, operational, or regulatory issue, and he is always up to date on the latest trends and innovations. Dennis is the go-to person for any technical, operational, or regulatory issue,” Martinez said.

Lyons is also known for his advocacy work. He has represented the interests of motorcoach operators and passengers in various forums, from testifying at legislative hearings to serving as the president of the Connecticut Bus Association. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping policies that impact the industry, earning him widespread respect among his peers.

KLEIN

A record of safety and reliability

Danny Serff, a driver for Klein Transportation, was honored for his impeccable safety record. 

Nominated by Larry Kreiser, Serff has been driving for several years without any accidents or damage to vehicles. His commitment to safety is reflected in his perfect safety score, and he is a regular member of Klein’s “Top Gun” team, which recognizes drivers for exceptional performance.

Klein receives many letters of praise from his passengers. 

In addition to his driving, Serff plays a key role in training new and existing drivers, passing on his knowledge, and ensuring that safety remains a priority across the company, Kreiser said. 

LAKELAND

A career in tour development

Bob Roth, of Lakeland Bus, was recognized for his 35-year career in the motorcoach industry, specifically in developing tour programs. Roth started his career in 1989 as a tour escort and has since developed hundreds of tour programs across the United States and Canada. 

Nominated by Mark Renee, Roth was credited for his versatility in various roles over his 23 years with the company, from sales and marketing to managing Lakeland’s tour directors.

Roth has escorted more than 400 tours throughout his career and continues to be an essential figure in shaping travel experiences for Lakeland’s passengers.

“He’s also involved in sales and marketing, audiovisual presentations, group leader breakfasts and manages Lakeland’s corps of tour directors,” Renee said. 

PANORAMA

Quick thinking under pressure

Rohan Actable, of Panorama Tours, was honored for his professionalism and quick thinking. Nominated by Michelle Petelicki, Actable has been with Panorama for six years and was praised for his punctuality and reliability. Since the pandemic, he has completed more than 1,000 trips to Atlantic City.

Petelicki highlighted an incident where Actable demonstrated his composure under pressure. When a tire from another vehicle hit the windshield of his bus on the Garden State Parkway, Actable acted swiftly to ensure the safety of everyone on board and prevent an accident.

“His ability to remain calm under pressure and navigate through unexpected challenges is a testament to his exceptional skills,” Petelicki said. “Whether facing a traffic delay, a difficult passenger, or a mechanical issue, we can always count on Rohan to handle the situation with utmost dedication.”

Starr

A steady climb to excellence

Ryan Anderson, of Starr Charter & Tours, started his career three decades ago as a bus cleaner. Nominated by Robert Graff, Anderson’s journey from an entry-level position to becoming a master motorcoach mechanic is a testament to his hard work, attention to detail and commitment to learning. 

Starr supported Anderson’s growth through various training programs and certifications. He eagerly embraced these opportunities, expanding his skill set and knowledge.  Over the years, he gained technical expertise and became an indispensable part of Starr’s operations.

“Ryan’s dedication is simply exceptional,” Graff said. “He consistently goes above and beyond, often putting in extra hours to ensure their buses are in top condition. His colleagues describe him as a reliable and committed professional, always willing to assist and share his extensive knowledge. His unwavering dedication has earned him the respect and admiration of both peers and supervisors.”

Beyond his technical skills, Ryan is known for his integrity, humility, and positive attitude. His ability to remain calm under pressure and exceptional problem-solving skills are crucial in maintaining the smooth operation of their fleet.

Stouts

Flexibility and commitment

Lloyd Kearney, of Stout’s Transportation, was selected for his adaptability and flawless driving record. Nominated by HJ Stout, Kearney has been with the company for four years and is frequently requested by passengers because of his professionalism and customer service. 

Known for his flexibility, Kearney has taken on assignments with little notice, including a 30-day trip with just one day’s preparation.

Kearney has also maintained an accident-free record.

“Lloyd is always adaptable and eager to help the company when asked,” Stout said. 

WERNER

A mentor and leader

Maureen Stewart, of Werner Bus Lines, was recognized for her leadership and mentorship within the company. Nominated by Heath Ochroch, Stewart transitioned from school bus driving to the world of charter buses over a decade ago. She has since become Werner’s senior driver, known for her customer service and her ability to connect with passengers.

Her dedication was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she returned to work as soon as the company resumed operations.

Stewart also is an invaluable mentor. Affectionately known as “Mom” to many new drivers, she guides them with wisdom and kindness as they find their footing in the charter bus world. 

“Her commitment, kindness, and exceptional service make Werner Bus Lines much more than just a bus company,” Ochroch said. “She embodies the spirit of our organization, making every journey memorable and every passenger feel valued.”
