Tour driver declared hazard to public safety

AUGUSTA, GA — The man behind the wheel when a tour bus crashed on its way to the Masters Golf Tournament, sending 15 passengers to the hospital, has been declared “an imminent hazard to public safety.”

The driver, Steven Hoppenbrouwer, 61, was charged with driving under the influence after the April 5 bus crash in Georgia. He also faces seven felony charges of serious injury by vehicle.

In June, a federal order was issued prohibiting Hoppenbrouwer from operating any commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. The document describes Hoppenbrouwer as “an imminent hazard to public safety,” news station WJBF reported.

Hoppenbrouwer was transporting 18 passengers in a Jet Executive Limo Inc. motor coach to the prestigious golf tournament in Augusta. He lost control twice before flipping the 25-seat bus onto its side, along Interstate 20 in Columbia County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
