WINNIPEG, Manitoba — NFI Group Inc. said its New Flyer and MCI subsidiaries have launched a recall of certain zero-emission buses after discovering a potential cell short circuit or other battery fault, a move the company says is necessary to protect riders and operators.

The recall, filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Transport Canada, covers about 680 buses already delivered and a small number of motor coaches. It is also expected to affect 37 vehicles still in production for delivery in 2025.
“As the safety of our customers and their passengers remains a top priority, we felt it was necessary to issue this recall,” President and CEO Paul Soubry said. “We have provided immediate guidance to customers on interim safety measures, including actions to reduce battery stress and enhance monitoring, while we work with the supplier and our independent experts on developing a permanent solution.”
NFI plans to discuss the recall and its financial impact during a Nov. 7 conference call following the release of third-quarter results after markets close Nov. 6. The company said it expects to record a significant warranty provision but does not anticipate a material effect on its 2025 delivery schedule or full-year financial guidance.
