Camire, who will also serve as deputy administrator, steps into the role as FMCSA works to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety and improve the efficiency of the nation’s freight and passenger transportation systems.

“I am honored to lead FMCSA in its mission to prevent commercial motor vehicle crashes, fatalities, and injuries on our nation’s roads,” Camire said in a statement. “I look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to advance our shared safety goals.”

Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy welcomed the appointment, calling Camire a “dedicated leader” with extensive experience in transportation law and regulatory oversight.

“Ms. Camire brings executive experience, vision, and a strong commitment to safety,” Duffy said. “I have no doubt FMCSA will continue to make our roads safer and keep America moving under her leadership.”

Camire previously served as chief counsel for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) during the Trump administration, where she oversaw legal services related to the Federal-Aid Highway Program. She has more than two decades of legal, regulatory, and compliance experience in the private and academic sectors.

FMCSA has seen multiple acting administrators in recent years, with the agency’s last Senate-confirmed leader, Robin Hutcheson, stepping down in January 2024. Since its creation in 2000, FMCSA has had eight Senate-confirmed administrators, while 10 others have served in acting capacities.

Camire holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Brandeis University and a law degree from Suffolk University Law School.
