California’s Storer Transportation wins National 2024 School Bus Contractor of the Year Award

Storer Transportation, one of the nation’s oldest family-owned school bus contractors, was named the 2024 School Bus Contractor of the Year during School Bus Fleet’s (SBF) annual ConneX meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is the first time a California-based company has received the national honor.

The award is presented annually to one contractor who exemplifies outstanding dedication to the safety and well-being of students. Recipients consistently surpass expectations, serving as leaders in innovation and safety within the school transportation industry.

“It’s an incredible honor for Storer to receive this recognition among peers across the country – the fourth national award in our history,” says Donald Storer, President and CEO of Storer Transportation, which operates a fleet of over 1,000 vehicles and provides daily transportation services for more than 35 school districts across California.

“Storer has been built on the unwavering commitment to delivering reliable student transportation and nurturing innovation. It’s the foundation upon which we were established over 70 years ago and remains the driving force behind our relentless pursuit of providing safe and dependable transportation for the countless students and families who entrust us with their well-being each day.”

Safety and sustainability

Storer Transportation was founded in 1952 to transport children in Stanislaus County’s special education programs. The multi-generational, family-owned business offers student transportation, public transit, charter bus services, and large-scale shuttle operations.

The Modesto-based company integrates state-of-the-art safety features and sustainable practices and is a pioneer in the use of electric school buses. Earlier this year, Storer became the first school bus contractor in California to receive a grant for electric school bus bidirectional infrastructure.

Storer is implementing one of the nation’s largest deployments of vehicle-to-grid capabilities at its Modesto facilities, where electric buses can serve as backup power sources during emergencies.

The company, a United Motorcoach Association Member, has received several national awards in the past, including the Safety Leader of the Year Award from the UMA in 2007 and the International Motorcoach Group in 2009, as well as the Vision Award from the UMA in 2016.

School transportation is the nation’s largest form of mass transportation, according to the National School Transportation Association. School buses outnumber all other forms of public transportation vehicles by nearly 3.5 to 1, with over 50 million pupil trips taken daily across the U.S. Private contractors account for 38% of school bus services.
