New Flyer Opens Component-Manufacturing Plant in N.Y.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — New Flyer of America Inc. has opened a new component manufacturing and assembly facility in Jamestown, N.Y., southwest of Buffalo, creating about 40 local jobs.

The company is the U.S. subsidiary of Winnipeg-based New Flyer Industries Inc., which is also the parent company of bus manufacturer Motor Coach Industries.

The 40,000-square-foot facility, which began operations in late January, is manufacturing components for up to 10 New Flyer Xcelsior buses per week. The parts will be shipped to the company’s plant in St. Cloud, Minn., for assembly.

“We have been actively looking to expand our presence within the U.S. and specifically the state of New York to enhance our state content and support the local economy,” said New Flyer president and CEO Paul Soubry.

“Further, the New Flyer team is now working with our motorcoach subsidiary MCI to evaluate opportunities to manufacture motorcoach components at the same facility.”

New Flyer’s expansion into New York was made possible by the START-UP NY program, which is associated with New York State colleges and universities that have committed to create at least 4,490 new jobs and an investment into the state of more than $251 million over the next three-to-five years.

New Flyer, which is partnering with Jamestown Community College, is one of 202 businesses that have joined the START-UP NY program.

New Flyer has signed a five-year lease on the commercial building with options to extend to 15 years.
