Fraud scheme targets Minnesota carriers

Minnesota motor carriers should be aware of a fraudulent scheme in which someone posing as the U.S. Department of Transportation is requesting them to update their information online.

One letter reported by the state’s motor carriers targeted by the scam comes from “DOTService.com,” a site not affiliated in any way with McDOT or USDOT. The letter indicates the motor carrier will be find or their USDOT number deactivated if they don’t comply.

If you receive correspondence you suspect could be fraudulent, check its authenticity by contacting the federal transportation fraud hotline at oig.dot.gov/hotline or call 800.424.9071. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) also has a web page with tips for motor carriers who may be a target for fraud: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/fraudulent-and-misleading-marketing-new-fmcsa-applicants.
