Bus industry challenges Chicago Party Bus ordinance

Following a rash of violence tied to party buses, Chicago approved an ordinance a year ago requiring security guards and cameras for all buses that stop at locations serving alcohol, including museums, ballparks and restaurants.

So far, the new rules have been costly and cumbersome for charter bus operators, who are banding together to challenge them. In July, the Midwest Bus & Motorcoach Association formed a committee and hired a lobbyist to work on the issue that some blame for hurting the city’s tourism industry.

Cherie Hime, the association’s executive director, says the ordinance affects more than half of the group’s 44 member operators. Look for a full story in the Sept. 15 issue.
