Bus driver lauded for saving lives

A bus driver is being lauded for making sure 41 Virginia college student-athletes escaped a bus fire along North Carolina’s Interstate 95 in Wilson County on Feb. 2.

The Hampton University students were returning from a track and field competition in South Carolina around 10:15 p.m. when the rear of the bus began emitting black smoke.

The driver pulled over and quickly evacuated the students, making sure they were safely away as the blaze consumed the motorcoach. The bus driver “did an excellent job” of evacuating the students, Wilson County Emergency Management said in a statement.
