For Elisabeth Cancelliere and George Roggiero, education is about more than earning a degree – it’s about setting an example and giving back to their communities. Both recipients of the Greater Northeast Motorcoach Association’s (GNEMA) 2024 scholarships, announced during the Annual Member Meeting at Resorts Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Sept. 18, embody the values of perseverance and dedication.
Cancelliere, nominated by Trans-Bridge Lines, is a full-time employee, Marine Corps veteran, and mother of five who is working toward a business management degree at DeSales University.
“In my family, it will set a positive example for my children because I’m pursuing my degree while maintaining my full-time job. Even though I chose the Marine Corps first, serving eight years, it’s never too late for school,” she shared in her scholarship application.
Roggiero, nominated by Sprague Operating Resources, is committed to making an impact as an educator. He is pursuing a master’s degree in early childhood education.
“Through my involvement in scouting, team sports, and working as a camp counselor, I’ve seen the impact of genuine, in-person connections. I feel that as an educator, I can inspire young children and contribute to our community,” he wrote in his application.
$1,500 to each winner
Both winners of GNEMA’s sixth Annual Scholarship Awards were awarded $1,500 and a plaque. The scholarship program, developed to support the higher education and certification goals of GNEMA members and their families, is funded through association-led efforts, including the annual golf outing held on Sept. 17.
Eligibility for the scholarship extends to full-time employees and their dependent children from GNEMA Operator and Allied Member companies. Applicants must have worked for at least one year by Jan. 1 of the awarding year and be enrolled in a full-time college, professional school, or trade school, maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 or its equivalent.
Tim Stout, president of GNEMA, congratulated the winners and thanked the Scholarship Committee members, which included representatives from Caesars Entertainment, Busie, Prevost, King Gray Coach Lines, Resorts Casino, ABC Companies, and MCI/NFI.
GNEMA serves bus operators and owners in the Northeast. The association collaborates with industry partners and government agencies to promote safety and professionalism in the motorcoach industry, sponsoring initiatives such as driver excellence awards, safety workshops, and industry scholarship programs.
