UMA Safety Seminar looks at ELDs and what’s next

For many bus and motorcoach operators, UMA’s Safety Management Seminar, December 6-7, has a great deal more urgency this year because of the approaching December 18 deadline for implementing Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs).

Held annually at the National Transportation Safety Board Training Facility in Ashburn, VA, the annual event brings together risk management professionals from operators of all sizes for timely training and information focused specifically on motorcoach safety.

Representatives from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be on hand to answer participants’ questions and offer guidance to help operators to comply with the new regulations. Seminar participants will learn what’s next in terms of enforcement of the ELD mandate and what might happen during compliance reviews. In addition, they will get important insight into what their drivers can expect at destination and roadside inspections. LaTonya Mimms of the FMCSA is a scheduled speaker. She was a recent guest on UMA’s Motorcoach Minute podcast, where she discussed the upcoming mandate. The podcast is still available here, on the Bus & Motorcoach News website.

Other presenters announced to date are: Peter Chandler of FMCSA, who will give an update on the agency’s agenda; transportation and safety expert Jeff Petrunak speaking about facility safety and compliance, and legal expert Jill Nagy, presenting a session on legal issues facing the industry.  More speakers will be announced as they are confirmed.

And the ELD issue is just one part of a multi-faceted curriculum that will cover current legal issues, facility compliance, and cyber security and offer opportunities for interaction among participants. One of the most popular activities each year is “Knowledge & Solution Sharing” which empowers participants to identify challenges and suggest best practices for solutions. Look for full details and topics in October 15 issue of Bus & Motorcoach News issue. The event is limited to the first 150 registrants. Register and get the full agenda on the UMA website.
