Phoenix orders up to 50 MCI transit coaches

The Valley Metro transit system of Phoenix has awarded Motor Coach Industries (MCI) a five-year contract for up to 50 D45 CRT LE and D45 CRT Commuter Rapid Transit coaches. The coaches will improve the level of service and passenger comfort on commuter express highway routes connecting Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe and surrounding communities.

The commuter coaches carry MCI’s patented low-entry vestibule and automated retractable ramp that delivers shorter boarding times for passengers in wheelchairs.

“We are excited to introduce a style of commuter bus that will enhance the overall experience for our express riders,” said Scott Wisner, bus services delivery manager for Valley Metro. “In addition to enhanced comfort and safety amenities, the area designated for mobility devices will help riders more easily board and exit the bus.”

This is the first purchase of MCI buses by Valley Metro, which previously has operated heavy-duty transit buses built by New Flyer, MCI’s sister company. Valley Metro is a regional public transportation agency that provides 50 million multimodal passenger trips annually.
