The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded $2 million in grants to 29 intercity bus operators “to protect critical surface transportation infrastructure and the traveling public from acts of terrorism and to increase the resilience of transit infrastructure.”
The grants announced by DHS for the 2019 fiscal year will come from the Intercity Bus Security Grant Program (IBSGP), which “plays an important role in the implementation of the National Preparedness System by supporting the building, sustainment and delivery of core capabilities essential to achieving the National Preparedness Goal of a secure and resilient Nation.”
The bus security grants are part of $1.7 billion in funding given to states, local areas, tribal and territorial governments, nonprofit agencies and the private sector during the current year. DHS said the grants focus on “31 high-threat, high-density urban areas” that “face the most significant threats.”
