Co-sponsors of CERTS Act climb to more than 90 Senators and U.S. Reps

Washington, DC – While Congress remains adjourned for the August recess, the co-sponsor list
for the Coronavirus Economic Relief for Transportation Services (CERTS) Act continues to grow
in both chambers. The persistent efforts of motorcoach operators and their champions in the
industry and in their communities have yielded tens of thousands of letters to members of
Congress.

The CERTS Act was sponsored in the Senate by Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) and in the House by Rep.
Darin LaHood (R-IL).

An unofficial count shows 30 U.S. Senators now count themselves as co-sponsors, as do 63
House Members. The list appears below.

“If your officials are on the list, thank them,” said UMA President and CEO Larry Killingsworth. “And even more important, if they are not on the list, you must call them and ask for their help as a co-sponsor for the CERTS Act.”

“Be prepared to tell them how many your company employs and how many are laid off, as well as how your revenues compare to 2019,” Ken Presley, UMA’s VP for Legislative & Regulatory Affairs & Industry Relations/COO told motorcoach operators. “The more personalized, the better.”

Presley said that increasingly, some companies are running into resistance from legislators who oppose bailing out any single industry and may ask why the Paycheck Protection Program doesn’t work.

“The generally acceptable answer,” he said, “is that the PPP is not perfect, but many have made it work for the short-haul. However, it simply does not provide sufficient funding for the longer-term problem the motorcoach industry is facing as a result of quarantines and social distancing.”
