Bus drivers win $1 million

A group of Canadian bus drivers won’t have to worry about money for a while.

Bus driver Frederick “Nate” Green got to be the bearer of some seriously awesome news after learning that he and a group of his fellow bus drivers won a $1 million Maxmillions prize from the July 31 Lotto Max draw.

Green is team ‘captain’ of a group of 10 players, nine of whom are bus drivers. He purchased the ticket at a lottery kiosk at University Heights Mall on Shelbourne Street in Victoria, British Columbia. After hearing that a ticket purchased in Victoria had won, Green checked the group’s ticket from his couch at home, using the BCLC Lotto! App.

“It was a really great feeling to be able to tell the guys we won—we really won,” Green told the B.C. Lottery Corporation.

One of the 10 winners told CTV News that he plans to use his share of the winnings to pay off the mortgage on his house and buy his wife a new car.

Green buys the transit team Lotto Max and BC/49 tickets twice a month, always choosing Quick Pick. When he first told one of the group’s players, he said he’d never seen anyone react that way.

“He was in shock, he just kept walking around in circles,” Green said, laughing. “I think he forgot where he was.”

But the shock didn’t last long for the Victoria crew, which is planning on organizing a physically distanced celebration in the near future. Green says the group will keep playing, and he’ll keep buying for them.

“We got our spark back now that we won,” he said.
