WASHINGTON -- The Republican leaders of the U.S. House say the Obama Administration should withdraw its proposed regulations for truck driver hours of service.

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., say the revised hours-of-service rules would raise costs and hurt the economy.

The regulations are an instance where the White House and Congress can work together to lift a potential "$1 billion in regulatory burden," Boehner and Cantor said in a letter addressed to Obama.

"Current rules have led to record-low levels of crashes and fatalities involving trucks," the two wrote.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is considering a proposed hours-of-service rule that could cut an hour of allowable driving time out of the workday for commercial truck drivers.

The letter from Boehner and Cantor follows a statement from Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, vowing to have his committee "aggressively oversee any attempt by USDOT to impose new regulatory burdens on the trucking industry by making changes to the current rules."

There is precedent for congressional action.

Congress most recently got directly involved in trucker hours of service in 2004. Lawmakers stepped in after a federal appeals court said a new FMCSA rule that increased driver time behind the wheel from 10 to 11 hours did not take into account driver health.

Congress passed a measure that said the rule was to stay in effect while FMCSA made revisions to satisfy the court.

The agency is scheduled to announce changes to the hours-of-service rules on Oct. 28 that the trucking industry and business groups have said could have a negative impact on productivity and the economy.
